How to determine the need for this treatment
Head lice and pubic lice usually affect areas covered with hair and are easy to notice. Scabies burrow into the skin and may not be so easy to notice, but you need to know the spots they are likely to affect – such as backs of the knees and elbows, areas between the fingers, genitals and buttocks, areas around the nipples, sides of the feet or wrists. Those spots are the most common for scabies mites because the skin is thinner there and it's easier for the mites to burrow through. The main symptom of both infections – itching, should not be confused with itching caused by some other conditions, such as eczema.
You will have to apply this medicine only on the areas that have been affected and on those you are supposed to apply it on. Never apply Elimite on any cuts or wounds, as well as any areas of skin whose integrity has been comprised. To make sure your treatment is efficient, you may also need to treat your environment, including hair brushes, hats, furniture, bedding, pillows, accessories and clothing. Make sure you avoid close or sexual contact with other people until your infection has cleared up. These parasitic infections are very contagious and can be easily passed from person to person.
How this drug can affect unborn babies
Permethrin is FDA pregnancy category B, because it is not expected to cause harm to the child of the woman applying it during pregnancy. However, it is not known what kinds of effects Elimite may cause in a nursing infant. You will always have to make sure you discuss the use of this medicine with your doctor if you are breastfeeding a child at the moment of starting the treatment. Elimite should not be used for children younger than 2.
Using your medicine for scabies
For the treatment of scabies, you will have to apply a very thin layer of the medicine to all your body parts from the neck down, rubbing it in. Leave the medicine for up to 14 hours (can also be 8, depending on the recommendations of your doctor) and wash it off after this period. If you are using Permethrin on a small child, you need to apply the cream on the forehead, scalp and templates, avoiding the nose, eyes and mouth. You may need another application if the problem does not disappear within 14 days of the treatment.
Using your medicine for head lice and pubic lice
When you use shampoo for head lice and pubic lice, you have to apply plenty of the shampoo to the hair and leave for 10 minutes. After that, work the shampoo into lather and rinse it off. You may need to use a nit comb to get rid of the lice eggs. You may also require a second application if the problem is present within 7 days from the moment you finished the treatment. If you have pubic lice, you will have to apply the shampoo form of the medicine on the hair of the genital area, as well as to any hair around that area, including in the thighs and anus. You will have to apply enough of shampoo to saturate the hair and then leave the medicine for 10 minutes. Once the ten minutes are up, you should work the shampoo into lather and rinse it off. A nit comb may be required in case of pubic lice as well. You will have to use it when the hair is damp and dispose of the eggs by throwing them away in a sealed plastic bag to avoid re-infestation.
In addition to getting the treatment yourself and treating all your family members, you will have to wash all the things in your house that can be washed or dry-cleaned. You will have to vacuum the carpets and furniture to make sure any eggs are removed and re-infestation does not occur. Scabies mite eggs can survive outside of the body for up to 2 weeks. Elimite is also available as spray that you can use on the objects that should not be washed or cannot be dry-cleaned, such as gloves, mattresses, scarves, hats, pillows, furniture, headbands, headphones and stuffed toys. If there are some things that you wound not like to clean in any of the ways mentioned, or use spray on them, you may need to seal them in airtight plastic bags and leave them that way for up to 4 weeks.
If you miss a dose
Permethrin is usually applied once, although there are cases when reapplications may be required. Therefore, you will need to apply it once or twice only. There is no need to observe the dose or follow any kind of schedule, but you do need to make sure you follow the exact recommendations of your health care provider.
